*Reveals when we get to see the killer*
Seasons Grievings
The Body Count Continues to Rise at Days of Our Lives
Death will not take a holiday in Salem. Days of Our Lives' serial killer, who has already whacked four popular characters, will dispense with sassy sexpot Cassie DiMera (Alexis Thorpe) at Thanksgiving. Police commander Roman Brady (Josh Taylor) will meet his maker at New Years' Eve. And there's more gore in store for 2004. In late January, Count Tony DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) goes bye-bye in a tragedy ripped from recent headlines: he will be attacked by a tiger.
Days head writer James Reilly tells us the incident will occur during a circus-themed charity soiree. "Tony will be hospitalized and survive his wounds," Reilly says. "But then something is injected into his IV -- and that's when the audience will finally see the face of the killer."
Reilly will give viewers a break from the mayhem at Christmas, promising a "very uplifting, very emotional Christmas Eve episode: that will include a marriage proposal, a surprise announcement from one of the Hortons and the return of fan favorite Chloe Lane (Nadia Bjorlin)."
Reilly pooh-poohs internet rumors that he plans to create a whole new Days family in order to shore up his dwindling cast of characters. But he admits, "I will be adding new members to the families that already exist."
NBC handed the Days reins to Reilly last summer, confident that he would expand young viewership, and it seems to be working: Days is now No. 1 among female teens and women 18 to 34. But the grisly, high-camp plot has also resulted in a 45 percent increase in the demo group that's toughest to lure to soaps these days -- working women. And we ain't seen nothing yet. Reilly says there will be three more murders by March.
